The Indian pharmaceutical industry is one of the biggest industry in the world, it ranks about third in terms of volume and fourteenth in the terms of value. It has seen various development in the means of mass production, research and development, biotechnology and drug development and exporting.

Starting a pharma company in such a cut throat era of competition is difficult but to pull such an ambition but if it is successful it will be written down in history. Lets walk through this article and get to know about top 10 Indian Pharma Companies and their CEOs.

1. Sun pharma: Dilip Shanghvi

It is one of the top company in the pharmaceutical history. It was founded by Mr. Dilip Shanghvi in 1983 in Vapi area of Gujarat state. The company initially started with products to treat psychiatry ailments and now is a producer of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API). It has marked upto 70-80 percent sales from the overseas market and it also has set up manufacturing units in various countries. Mr. Shanghvi who was born in Kolkata was into the business of generic drugs with his father, he started Sun Pharma with a mere amount of ten thousand rupees. 2. CIPLA: Umang Vohra

It is one of the top 10 companies in India. CIPLA stands for Chemical Industrial & Pharmaceutical Laboratories. It develops medicines to treat respiratory disorder, arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weight control, depression other severe conditions. It was started by Khwaja Abdul Hamied back in 1935. He studied chemistry in Germany as it was the then chemical leader. He also conceptualized the estabilishment of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. Mr. Umang Vohra who is the current C.E.O. of this organization has made a remarkable progress as the company head. Mr Vohra is the current CEO and the member of the board of CIPLA. He was the Chief Operating Officer till August 2016.

3. Aurobindo Pharma: N. Govindarajan

Aurobindo Pharma limited is a Hyderabad based manufacturing company that produces antibiotics, central nervous system products, gastroenterological, antiretrovirals, cardiovascular products, and anti-allergic medications it also produces A.P.I. and generic medications. This company started way back in 1988 in Puducherry. Under the leadership of N. Govindarajan the company makes net profits of approxima. And it also exports its productions to other countries.

4. Lupin: Vinita D Gupta

Lupin limited is the worlds eight largest pharmaceutical company by the means of revenue. Founded by a professor of BITS Pilani professor Mr. Desh Bandhu Gupta in 1968 sells in 70 countries including U.S.A, Japan and Australia. It has 12 manufacturing plants across different cities and 2 research facilities. Gupta started this company with an investment of five thousand rupees that he borrowed from his wife. He then took a loan of eight lakh from central bank of India and made folic acid tablets and provided it to the government for programmes related to mother and child healthcare. Under the keen leadership of Mrs. Vinita D. Gupta who is the daughter of daughter of Mr. D.B.Gupta the company has taken the company forward. 5. Dr. Reddys labs: G V Prasad

Dr. Kallam Anji Reddy founded Dr. Reddys labs and Dr. Reddys Foundation, he estabilished this company in 1984. He was also awarded the Padmashri and later the Padma Bhushan . This Hyderabad based company makes over 190 medications and over 60 API materials. Dr. Anji previously worked at Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited, and then began as a supplier to drug manufacturers and then later started to export drugs to unregulated markets and was awarded as the most trusted brands in India. 6. Cadila Healthcare: Pankaj Patel

Cadila Healthcare is the sixth largest company in India and was founded by Mr. Ramanbhai Patel in 1952. Mr. Patel was formerly a lecturer at L.M. College Of Pharmacy and he has developed this company along with his partner Mr. Indravadan Modi. This company makes lots of medications related to various areas of the body and has 10 manufacturing plants across the country. Founded by Mr. Murali Devi in 1990 this is the youngest pharma industry in the country. 10. Glenmark: Glenn Mario Saldanha

It produces drugs in the fields of cancer, dermatology and respiratory diseases. Mr. Glenn Mario Saldanha is the current CEO of this firm and has made this company earn a fortune.
