Lack of Sleep can Lead Weight Gain

Sleep plays important role for your good health and well-being throughout your life according to National Sleep Foundation(NSF). During sleep, your body works on growth and development as well as helps healthy brain function.

Individual’s sleep is depends upon their needs or vary. In general, most healthy people are taking 16 hours of wakefulness and they need an average of eight hours of sleep a night. However, some people are able to work without sleepiness after as little as six hours of sleep. So, don’t compromise with sleep because the need for sleep doesn't decline with age but the ability to sleep for six to eight hours at one time may be reduced.


According to researchers of Uppsala University Sweden, just one night sleep loss affects regulation of metabolism and helps to gain weight in human body.This research was published in August in Science Advances.


So, which people have long-term sleep problem because of work irregular shifts or wasting midnight time on their smartphones , they are going through the risk of reducing level of metabolism. Studies found that, changes DNA methylation of genes and ability increase to store fat and reduces blood glucose metabolism because of lack of sleep.


According to Chinese and Dutch researchers, the permanent night shift person is to be overweight by 29% rather than those are rotating shifts. Because of lack of sleep, human body reduces levels of leptin and increases level of ghrelin which is hunger-stimulating hormone.


There are several reasons of why lack of sleep happens. Most importantly, our display of artificial lighting (laptops, smartphones, TVs etc). It is said that these devices emit a blueish color light that affects our sleep inducing melanin.Another common reason could be our irregular eating schedule. It is always advisable to eat your last meal at least 2 hours before your sleep time.


One other very important reasons is the lack of exposure to sunlight. It is highly recommended that everyone gets exposed to at least 15 mins of sunlight once every 3 days. This enables processing of Vitamin D which is helpful in absorbing calcium.


Lastly and most importantly, exercise everyday. And exercise light in the evening. High cardio type workouts would increase your heart rate causing you to have sleep disorder. Plan Heavy workouts during the day.


Because of these four reasons, you are suffering from lack of sleep. This may not happen immediately, but a step in the right direction is definitely a great start to reduce your weight.
